September 14, 2008 For the first time
ever we had to cancel a ride because of a gas shortage.
The plan was to go to the animal safari in Pine Mountain. But, for
the second year in a row those plans were thwarted. This time it was
hurricane Ike that stymied our plans. Hurricane Ike came nowhere around
here. In fact it was a gorgeous day for riding. The sky was clear the
temp was in the low eighties at the peak of the day. However, the
hurricane came through the gulf the night before hitting right on
Galveston, TX and the center of the oil refining industry. By Friday
night (even before Ike made landfall) gas prices were spiking at over
$5/gallon. The bigger problem however, was not the price but the
availability. Pipelines were shut down and no gas was coming in to the
area. Stations were running out, even at these thievery prices. People
were in a panic. Stations that had gas had cars lined up.
In fear that we would get to our destination and not be able to get
home, we decided to cancel this ride and replace it with a breakfast
gathering.
We met, as usual, at AMW and had a really good turnout. Around 9:30
we figured everyone was there that was coming. We took a couple
suggestions for a breakfast location and decided on the Golden Coral
near Northpoint Mall. Five minutes later we were sitting in the
restaurant and ready to eat.
We had a good time. Everyone got their fill of breakfast and I'm
pretty sure I saw several people eating deserts from the buffet!! We
talked, we ate, we had a good time and enjoyed each other's company.
It wasn't the outing we had planned but it was still fun. Just goes
to show that it really is about the people and the fellowship.
