June 3, 2007 Although this
was not one of our regularly scheduled rides, we still had a decent
turnout. There was a small threat of rain for the day, but it never
really materialized and it turned out to be a very nice day.
The morning started off early with a rendevouz at
Atlanta Motor World. The morning air was a little cool and was welcomed
knowing the heat to come. From AMW we headed over to the mall for
registration, coffee and water. While there we ran into some old friends
and had a chance to talk.
They fired up the bikes on time and before we knew it,
we were on our way. The turnout seemed a little lower this year. Maybe
it was the threat of rain, maybe it was other events on this day. But
regardless, the word was that the contributions were up, even with fewer
riders. We rode up 400 to Hwy 369 and then cut over to hwy 9 for the
rest of the ride to Dahlonega. It was a nice ride. The pace was pretty
good with minimal slowdowns.
After arriving at the destination, we took a break,
used the restrooms, and then decided to head over to the Smith House for
some good eatin'. We beat the lunch crowd and were able to be seated
very quickly. In the parking lot we met a couple on their bikes from
Alabama and had them join us for our meal. The food was excellent as
always. A good country meal with friends just cannot be beat. Everyone
got plenty to eat.
Outside the restaurant was a giant oak shade tree with
some benches beneath its branches just inviting us to spend a little
time enjoying its comfort. So, some sat and some stood around and we
talked a little more, giving our food a little time to settle before
heading out. The breeze, the shade and the friends reminded me of bygone
summers and the carefree feelings of youth. Eventually we decided we
needed to move on. A few headed on home and the rest of us decided to
walk around the town square. We visited a few stores, did some window
shopping and somehow managed to spend a little money.
It had been a good day and as always I hated to see it
end. However, we eventually parted ways and headed home.
BTW, The ride in Atlanta raised $170K. To read more
