June 10-11, 2006

Everyone met up at Atlanta Motor World around noon for our ride to Dillsboro NC for the train ride and dinner. We'll I say everyone, but "everyone" was only 4 bikes...3 couples & a solo...seven riders! Maybe it was just a busy weekend, maybe everyone had other plans, maybe it seemed a little pricey to some...whatever the reason...those who weren't able to make the ride really missed a great time.

The ride up was fun. The weather fantastic. Somehow, I got elected to lead. I guess we did alright....I only had to do 1 U-turn. We left early enough that we were able to take our time. We made a short stop north of Gainesville for a light lunch. )We didn't want to spoil our appetites for the four course dinner that awaited us later.) The lunch break gave us a chance to cool off and refresh, but as is always the case provided time to talk and enjoy the company. After lunch we headed on up to Franklin, arriving there mid afternoon. The one solo rider with us (John) wasn't staying for the train ride. He just wanted to do the ride up with us. After he got a cool drink of water and a little cool air, while the rest checked in, he mounted back up and headed back home.

Once checked in, we went to our rooms to freshen up and dress for dinner. The train had a dress code and we all had to don dressier clothes. Men in casual slacks and collared shirts. The women in pants suits....well....except for Maria who opted for a long skirt. We all looked rather spiffy as we hopped on the bikes for the ride from Franklin to the train in Dillsboro. Maria drew a little attention getting on the bike in her skirt, but to some peoples amazement she managed to do so gracefully and without problem.

We arrived at the train, checked in and got our tickets. There was a cheese and wine reception on the platform before the train boarded. After a quick orientation by the hosted the conductor declared "all aboard" and we entered the train. We were directed to a dining car. Tables were set with white linen tablecloths, silver and crystal. Our salads were waiting on us when we sat down. As we started on the salads the train got underway. Shortly the server came around for drink orders. A full line of cocktails and wine was available as well as non-alcoholic drinks. After salads were finished and the plates collected, a second course of salmon cakes was presented for our dining pleasure. These were very tasty and my two cakes disappeared rather quickly. Next up was the entree. Maria and I had chosen the filet mignon. It was served with mashed potatoes and garnished with an edible orchid....yes...I ate the orchid too! Just as we were finishing up the entree the train slowed to a stop. We realized we had been riding for about an hour and a half.. Good food, good company, good conversation...the time was flying by. It was very relaxing and enjoyable. Shortly the engine came back around and hooked up to the other end of the train for the ride back.

Once in motion the empty plates were collected and we were served our dessert. It was an excellent blend of various berries and cream. Strawberries, blueberries and blackberries served in a custard-like cream that tasted fantastic. The whole thing was served in a parfait style glass and topped with whipped cream. Finally, to finish off the meal, complimentary champagne was served to all.

Before we know it we were  back at the station.  All I can say is that it was well worth the trip. We had a wonderful time with our fellow riders and got some great food and a train ride in the process. Once back at the station we got back on the bikes and made the ride to the hotel in the cool mountain air.

Sunday morning we met for our complimentary breakfast in the hotel before loading up for the ride home. We discussed various routes we could take. It was another beautiful day and it would be a waste not to do a little mountain riding before heading home. Well, we got inspired...and after a very brief discussion we decided we would head for Deal's Gap and the Dragon. With Preston taking the lead, a little over an hour later we were sitting at the gift shop at Deal's Gap and the start of the Dragon. We all bought the requisite shirts and patches and stickers. We took our pictures at the signs and then took off to face the Dragon. What a thrill. Personally, I had never ridden the Dragon before and was somewhat anxious having heard all the stories of disaster and knowing of the tree of shame. All I can say is that it was fantastic! What a ride. The road, the scenery (when you had a chance to look), the bikes, the cars, the people. It was a blast. Another unexpected adventure of Chapter 111.

But, sadly, once again, all good things must end and we had to head home. We made a quick stop for a burger one the way back, where we said our farewells before mounting up. All too soon we were back. I keep saying it, but what a great weekend! I can't believe how boring my life was before joining up with this group. Now, I look forward to each ride with my extended family.........make sure you are there for the next one....you never know what you might be missing.....its almost always a little more than planned!
