October 28, 2006 Fall is
quickly rolling into winter. It was downright chilly. The skies were
clear, but the temperature didn't seem to go with the sunshine and clear
blue skies. By the time we got to Atlanta Motor World to meet up with
everyone we were already pretty cool, despite long johns, multiple
shirts, heavy jackets, gloves, and face masks.
Looking back, I don't think it was really that cold.
We had been in Daytona a week earlier and it had been in the 90's there.
It was in the low 40's on this morning and that is a big difference.
The turnout was very light for the ride but we headed
on to Greensboro. The ride was nice and as the time passed the weather
warmed. Greensboro is basically east of Atlanta so there were no
mountains to climb. Only country roads through the farm country with
beautiful fall trees. One quick stop for a break a little over halfway
satisfied us and allowed us to stretch and get some warm coffee.
We arrived in downtown Greensboro right at lunch time.
Exactly as planned. We immediately found our way to the Red Rooster Ice
Cream Parlor and Cafe. After exploring this shop, cafe, ice cream shop,
everyone finally sat down and placed an order. Most everyone had some
warm homemade soup and a sandwich. This place may be small but the
servings were large. No one should have left hungry. Now don't forget,
we were in an ice cream shop...so....everyone had to have some ice cream
for dessert. Flavors ranged from vanilla, to coffee, to play
dough....YES PLAY DOUGH.
Once everyone was done with their ice cream we headed
out to the street to hit the shops. Downtown is a historic district
dotted with antique stores and trinket shops. I think everyone found
something to buy.
Shopping done, it was time to go. Everyone wanted to
get home before the sun went down and the temps dropped. We all said our
goodbyes and headed off towards our homes. The air was warmer and the
ride home very pleasant. It had been a nice day, despite the cool start.
What can be better than a day in an old town, lunch at a family run
cafe, ice cream, fall weather, intimate shops and good friends....I mean
really....what could be better?
As always....Those who missed this ride, missed a great ride, great
weather, fantastic food, and most importantly good friends.
Be sure to be there next time.....you never know what
you might miss.....
