The sky was pretty ominous as we assembled
at the meeting point for the ride. The air was pretty warm for
9am and you could feel the moisture in the air. The weather forecast
predicted as much as a 50% chance of rain. Despite this, a good group
showed up for the ride. We pulled out on time with eight bikes
and headed for Cherohala Skyway.
We had a beautiful ride up through the mountains of north Georgia to
Tellico Plains, Tennessee. All the way to Tellico Plains we were
surrounded by dark skies. Somehow we managed to avoid any rain though.
We always turned away from it, or came through after it had made its
appearance. We found some wet roads, a little mist on the windshield
from time to time, but no rain.
Upon arriving in Tellico Plains, we fueled up the bikes and then
headed over to the local diner to fuel up our bodies. The food was
excellent and everyone enjoyed their meal.
With our bellies full, we headed out for the ride. The skies were
still cloudy and we still had the treat of rain, but we headed on.
With the sky overcast and the air heavy, the view wasn't as
spectacular as one would have wanted, but it was still beautiful.
Actually the fog lent a certain appeal to the views. As we crossed over
into North Carolina we hit a particularly thick pocket of fog. It was
rather dense and you could only see a couple bikes in front of you.
Taking our time and being patient we rode through ending up at the end
of the skyway in North Carolina.
The ride home from there was clear and sunny. We made a stop for gas
and then each headed their own way towards home.
If you had told me when we left Atlanta Motor World that we would
have made the entire day's ride without getting out the rain suits, I
wouldn't have believed you...but we did...and enjoyed every minute of
it.
